Our engagement story
It was a 4:30 AM on Wednesday morning in Lahaina, Maui and so far, it's been an incredible vacation. I was so excited to wake up before the sun came up, which is a rare occasion in which I didn't mind the alarm clock waking me up. Kyle and I were to hit the road to Hana for the first time. With our day bags packed, "click" went the sound of the seat belt. We had an eventful day planned out for a road trip to see cascading waterfalls along the side of the narrow and windy road and ocean views that went on for miles. As we drove out of the resort in pure darkness, we knew we wouldn't be getting back to our beach front resort till the evening in darkness. We had the top up on our cherry red mustang convertible as we saw water droplets hit the windshield, "Well, it wasn't going to be much of a beach day!" I said to Kyle. Little did I know this was not only going to be an adventure through the magical road to Hana but an adventure through life on the road to engagement. When, where, and how my husband Kyle proposed made this day one of the most memorable moments in my life because it was our one-year anniversary, it came as a complete surprise as we were hiking in the rain, and he had the ring custom made by a friend's father.
Kyle had our engagement trip to Maui planned so he can propose on our one-year anniversary, exactly a year after the first date we had back in November 30, 2015. Our first date was unique, it was a blind date set up by a professional match maker. We spent the evening talking about everything you shouldn't talk about on a first date: politics, family drama, and religion. We had so much in common and we ended up chatting the night away till the hotel bar had closed. As soon as we parted ways, I called the match maker at 12:30am in the morning to tell her I was excited about Kyle and couldn't wait to see him again. As I look back, much like our road to Hana trip, our first date also included rain that day, and as I was driving home, "SPLAT!" When a rain drop that hit my windshield as I drove home in the dark.
Kyle caught me a complete surprise when he proposed. It was a long day sitting in the vehicle as we drove through the narrow and windy road to Hana. We passed by cascading waterfalls along the road of lush tropical greenery that went on for miles. We finally arrived at our hiking destination, Pipiwai Trails, and the rain was off and on since the morning which made for a great hiking day since many people weren't on the trail. But as we reached the end of the trail, we were both pretty muddy and our socks and shoes were soaked. We finally reached the end of the trail where we came across the 400-foot-tall Waimoku Falls. We had the Falls all to ourselves and Kyle dropped down on one knee in the mud and proposed with the most beautiful ring. Immediately right after the proposal, we were able to take a few pictures as the rain stopped for 2 minutes. The rain started to come down like cats and dogs, and for the entire hiking trip back to the car I couldn't help but keep starting at the most beautiful piece of jewelry I have ever owned.
Kyle designed the engagement ring himself and had hired a friend's father who was a retired jeweler to make it. Kyle had put a lot of effort into buying the engagement ring that he knew I would be wearing for the rest of my life. Early on in our relationship he would ask me about jewelry I like and wear to get my sense of style. He then proceeded to research online and had found my Pinterest vision board that I created a long time ago that had Reese Witherspoon's emerald cut engagement ring. Emerald is my birthstone and I always dreamed of having an Emerald cut diamond as my engagement ring. He purchased a 2.5 carat separately through a gem wholesaler and then reached out to the retired jeweler who then agreed to make the ring. He proceeded to design the ring in his garage based on the picture on my Pinterest board and completed the ring with 23 tiny diamonds on the band with a platinum setting. The ring is probably the most expensive object I have ever owned and although money cannot buy happiness the ring is a symbol of the happiness and life my husband and I have created.
While the road to engagement was one of the most memorable moments in my life, on our one-year anniversary, on a hike through the wet and muddy trail, with the most beautiful ring I could ever dream of. That day set the foundation of our relationship for the rest of our lives to share many more anniversaries full of surprises like the day he dropped to one knee while hiking in the rain.
